Binance attacker suspected of mistakenly transferring $3.5 million worth of tokens to NEWT contract address, assets have been permanently locked

The Newton Foundation announced in a post that the attacker behind the Binance hack incident apparently made an accidental error earlier today, transferring approximately 8 million NEWT tokens and 17 other tokens directly to the NEWT token contract address. The combined value of these tokens at current prices is around $3.5 million, including tokens such as ANIME, ANKR, ARPA, BARD, FTT, LQTY, SIGN, and WOO. The foundation emphasized that the NEWT token contract itself was not hacked. Inspections confirm the contract is immutable, has no owner or administrator, all management permissions were abandoned on-chain in 2025, and its upgrade function is permanently disabled. As a result, no party, including the foundation, can retrieve tokens directly transferred to the contract. The foundation added that these tokens are now permanently locked, out of the attacker’s control, and cannot be sold on the market anymore. The relevant investigation findings have been shared with Binance, and the foundation will continue to provide assistance.

The U.S. Treasury Department raised $839 billion through its Treasury bond auctions this week, hitting a new all-time high.

This week, the U.S. government raised $839 billion through Treasury bill and bond issuances, hitting an all-time high. The move is aimed both at repaying maturing debt and securing additional funds needed for federal deficit financing. Auctions held this week for Treasury bills, floating-rate notes, and 2-year, 5-year, and 7-year Treasury securities exceeded the $834 billion record set in the same period last year. The $839 billion total covers 11 auctions, most of which go toward repaying principal to holders of maturing Treasury bills. Only $106 billion of this sum constitutes the U.S. government’s "new borrowing", far from historical highs. The previous peak occurred in March and April 2020, when Treasury auctions surged to raise funds for pandemic response, with weekly net new cash reaching a near $362 billion high. Tony Farren, head of interest rate sales and trading at Mischler Financial Group, said: "The Treasury’s weekly total debt issuance hitting an all-time high is by no means a good thing. The biggest risk is that investors may demand higher yields."
