HSBC: Hong Kong dollar stablecoin RedCoin draws around 50,000 customers in its first week of launch, targeting a user base of one million.

On the first day of Hong Kong FinTech Week, HSBC Group CEO Noel Quinn stated that Hong Kong dollar retail stablecoin RedCoin has attracted around 50,000 users in over a week since its launch, with a target to expand to millions, attributing its rapid growth to the relatively lenient and secure regulatory environment set by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). RedCoin is one of only two licensed stablecoins in Hong Kong. Since October, it has been made available to over 3.3 million users via PayMe, supporting peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments. It will later be rolled out to all HSBC and Hang Seng Bank customers, and integrated into the HSBC Hong Kong mobile banking app, enabling subscriptions to tokenized assets including money market funds. HSBC Hong Kong CEO Grace Wu added that merchant payments and wallet top-up functions are already live, with early usage proving encouraging. The bank also announced the same day that it will establish a Global AI and Emerging Technologies Research Institute in Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis, slated to begin operations in early 2027.
