Microsoft is transforming Windows into an agent workbench, enabling AI to directly operate computers while reducing token consumption.

Beating AI Insight News Flash: Microsoft has unveiled Windows' "hybrid intelligence" initiative, which will enable AI Agents to execute tasks directly on personal computers. Once authorized, Copilot can access local files and recent activity, organize documents, troubleshoot issues, and write code. In a Microsoft demo, the AI automatically gathered tax filing materials, renamed files, packaged attachments, and drafted an email to send to accountants. The core of this solution lies in the collaboration between on-device AI and cloud AI: Copilot takes charge of task reception, while Windows provides access to files and operational capabilities. Some tasks can be handled by the on-device model, reducing cloud token consumption and keeping sensitive data local. For tasks requiring stronger reasoning capabilities, the cloud model will be called in. To support on-device operation, Microsoft has compressed the 137-billion-parameter programming model MAI Code 1.1 Flash to 53GB, enabling it to run on high-performance PCs equipped with RTX Spark. GitHub Copilot will also automatically select between on-device and cloud models via HydraFusion, eliminating the need for paid cloud inference for certain coding tasks. Microsoft has also launched the MXC security sandbox, which restricts the files and networks that Agents can access to prevent unauthorized operations. MXC is now officially available. New capabilities for Copilot, such as local file access and PC operation execution, will roll out to Copilot+ PCs over the coming months.
