Ai2 open-sourced its 8B-parameter research report model, cutting intermediate steps to speed up generation by 3.5x.

2026.10.03 11:49:07

Beating AI News reports that AI2 has open-sourced AstaBrief 8B, a research report model based on Qwen3-8B that serves as the report-writing component of AI2’s research assistant Asta. Asta first retrieves relevant papers and content snippets, then passes them to AstaBrief to organize into a cited research report. Asta’s original "Thinking" mode relied primarily on Claude and used a multi-step process: it first summarized and organized retrieved results, then generated reports by chapter. AstaBrief eliminates these intermediate steps, allowing it to produce a full report in one step once given a research question and relevant paper snippets. AI2 has now integrated AstaBrief into Asta’s Fast mode. AI2’s tests show Fast mode takes an average of 51.1 seconds to generate a report, compared to 178.5 seconds for the original Claude-powered Thinking mode—an approximate 3.5x speedup. In the ScholarQA-CS2 benchmark, AstaBrief scores 90.5 in citation precision and 78.2 in citation recall, while base Qwen3-8B scores 76.2 and 64.6 respectively. The model weights are released under the Apache 2.0 license, with training data also made public. Developers can integrate AstaBrief into their own paper retrieval systems, or use official examples to process local PDFs directly. AI2 also noted that the model’s main training and evaluation were completed in 2025, with comparisons made to state-of-the-art systems at that time; no full retesting was conducted against 2026’s latest models like Claude.

Sabi enables AI to learn personal aesthetic preferences from brain signals, with the generated faces growing increasingly aligned with users’ tastes.

Beating AI News (Dongcha) — Brain-computer interface firm Sabi has unveiled a new study titled RLNF (Reinforcement Learning with Neural Feedback). In the demo, an AI-generated face evolves continuously, gradually transforming into a shape more aligned with the viewer’s aesthetic preferences. Researchers aim to enable AI to learn individual preferences from brain signals, eliminating the need to repeatedly ask users which images they prefer. The team first had 5 participants view a large number of faces, while recording their electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye movements, and asking them to rate each face’s attractiveness. Using this data, the AI learns the physiological responses each person exhibits when viewing faces they like or dislike, building a model of individual aesthetic preferences. Subsequently, researchers used the preference data to fine-tune the FLUX.2 Klein 4B image model via reinforcement learning. Each time the AI generates a new batch of faces, the system compares them to previously recorded faces and delivers rewards based on individual preferences inferred from brain signals. The model adjusts continuously based on these rewards, gradually learning to generate faces that better match a specific user’s aesthetic, with no need for participants to rate each image individually throughout the process. Previous studies have used EEG feedback to guide AI in generating faces people like. Sabi, however, applies this feedback to reinforcement learning for image models, allowing individual aesthetics to directly influence the model’s generation tendencies. That said, the experiment currently only has 5 participants, with the preferences of 2 of them being judged primarily via eye movements rather than direct identification from brain activity. More experiments are needed to confirm that EEG can reliably reflect individual aesthetic preferences.

Polymarket’s theft compensation scheme is proposed to be implemented in tiers: amounts under $10,000 will be reimbursed directly, while larger sums require signing a settlement and liability waiver agreement.

Prediction market platform Polymarket’s international site suffered a breach of a third-party service provider, leading to stolen funds from some users. The platform has publicly pledged to fully compensate affected traders and filed a report with law enforcement; its U.S.-based operations were not impacted. On-chain analytics show roughly 710 wallets, totaling about $2.7 million, had funds transferred out. Per CNBC, users with losses under $10,000 will have their funds restored directly by October 30; those exceeding this threshold must sign a release (settlement/liability waiver) document before receiving compensation. Some users shared protocol screenshots, alleging that large-compensation claimants were also required to submit identity information prior to payouts. While the platform verbally committed to making users whole, the written terms appeared to function as a "no-sue" receipt first. The official tweet did not disclose the full contract text.
