U.S. initial jobless claims fell, allowing the Federal Reserve to stay focused on inflation.

U.S. weekly initial jobless claims fell, indicating the country’s labor market remains stable despite an unexpected drop in July employment. The U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday that for the week ending Aug. 22, seasonally adjusted initial claims decreased by 4,000 to 203,000, against economists’ forecast of 208,000. Initial claims are currently at the lower end of this year’s range of 189,000 to 230,000, suggesting layoffs stay low even amid weak hiring activity. The U.S. unemployment rate edged down slightly last month to 4.1%, a historic low. If the labor market continues to hold steady, the Federal Reserve may keep focusing on curbing inflation. U.S. inflation has exceeded the Fed’s 2% target for 65 consecutive months. Data also showed continuing jobless claims fell by 18,000 to 1.778 million, a metric that serves as a reference for hiring conditions. (Jinshi)

U.S. Plans to Export Its AI Regulatory Framework to G20, With Elon Musk, Sam Altman and Jensen Huang Involved.

Flash report from Beating AI Insight: The U.S. is set to push its "light-touch AI regulation" approach to more countries at next week’s G20 Innovation Ministers’ Meeting. Attendees include Elon Musk, David Sacks, Sam Altman, and Jensen Huang. The meeting will be held in North Carolina, U.S., from September 1 to 2, with technology and trade officials from over 20 countries participating. Bloomberg reports that Musk and Sacks will speak virtually on the first day, while Altman and Huang will appear in person on the second day. The U.S. wants G20 members to adopt looser tech regulation: avoid establishing new dedicated regulatory bodies, rely as much as possible on existing industry regulators, and allow governments and enterprises to jointly test new technologies like AI. The framework, dubbed the "Carolina Principles," is non-binding. If member states reach a consensus, the principles will be included in a joint statement and submitted for discussion at the December G20 Leaders’ Summit. This approach is essentially the international version of the Trump administration’s domestic AI policy. The White House explicitly stated in March this year that it would not establish a new federal AI rulemaking body, instead letting existing industry regulators and standards bodies oversee AI, while minimizing regulations that hinder AI deployment. Now, the U.S. is preparing to extend this same set of rules to the G20.

Hugging Face open-sources a $399 robot duck that can get back up on its own after falling and is retrainable.

Beating AI Express: Hugging Face’s open-source robotics subsidiary Pollen Robotics has unveiled Microduck, a $399 bipedal robot. Standing just 25 cm tall and weighing around 800 grams, it integrates 15 motors, a camera, LiDAR, and two IMUs. Out of the box, it can walk, sit, grasp objects, kick a ball, self-right after falling, and even glide when fitted with rollers. Microduck’s movements can be retrained independently: users first train actions via reinforcement learning in the MuJoCo physics simulator, then deploy the trained policy to the physical robot. The SDK, simulator, and full reinforcement learning training stack are all open-source, with the entire software released under the Apache 2.0 license. Pre-orders for Microduck are now open, with the first batch scheduled to ship before Christmas 2026.
