One session ran continuously for two days, generating 110MB of logs and consuming approximately 353 million tokens. When reopened, Codex only retained the initial message, though the actual work content was not lost. Codex stores full chat records locally and maintains an index for fast access, but the bug stems from this index: it got stuck at an early position, making subsequent records exist unaccessible to Codex. The user inspected their 439 sessions, finding 398 with index anomalies. Similar "false amnesia" issues were later reported on Windows Desktop, Remote SSH and other environments: underlying records remained intact, but the interface froze at an old position, with no active error alerts or automatic repairs. After the original poster deleted the corrupted index, Codex re-read the 110MB session in roughly 20 seconds, restoring all 398 anomalous sessions. However, subsequent cases revealed the problem isn’t limited to indexes—original records may also have duplicate serial numbers, so deleting the index directly isn’t safe in all cases. Currently, the bug remains open, with no associated fix pull requests (PRs) observed.
