Eclipse Founder Neel Somani Resigns as Executive Chairman, Shifts Focus to Machine Learning Research

2025.12.30 08:39:45

As first reported by The Block on December 30, Neel Somani—founder of Ethereum layer 2 protocol Eclipse—stepped down as the company’s board chairman in October 2025. Somani cited a desire to focus full-time on machine learning and other AI research as the reason for the move. Somani founded the firm in 2022, securing $15 million in seed funding to build a scaling solution using the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) before pivoting to develop a high-performance Ethereum L2 in 2023. After closing a $50 million Series A funding round in 2024, he transitioned from CEO to board chairman. The founder-led, pre-planned transition did not affect his equity stake or board powers.

Allianz CIO Ludovic Subran pointed out that SpaceX quickly issued a large-scale bond offering after its IPO, despite holding ample cash reserves. This strong demand in the debt market reflects investors’ excessive enthusiasm for high-valued tech and AI-related assets, which has entered bubble territory. Subran views such moves as signals of an overheated market and excessive risk appetite, potentially indicating unsustainable valuations or a potential correction. SpaceX recently completed its IPO and issued roughly $250 billion in investment-grade bonds, mainly to repay bridge loans and support AI infrastructure, despite holding over $1 trillion in cash.
