JPMorgan Analyst: Tether May Need to Sell Bitcoin to Comply with Proposed US Stablecoin Regulations

2025.02.13 18:56:34

On February 13th, as per The Block's report, a JPMorgan analyst stated that in order to meet the proposed U.S. stablecoin regulatory requirements, Tether might have to sell some non-compliant assets such as Bitcoin, precious metals, corporate bonds, and secured loans. The U.S. has introduced two stablecoin bills - the House's "Stablecoin Tethering and Bank Licensing Enforcement (STABLE) Act" and the Senate's "Guaranteeing Easy and Secure Transaction of Universal Settlements (GENIUS) Act", which aim to regulate stablecoin issuers through licensing requirements, risk management rules, and 1:1 reserve backing. According to the House's STABLE Act, Tether only has 66% of compliant reserves. Meanwhile, according to the Senate's GENIUS Act, the compliant reserve ratio is 83%. JPMorgan analyst Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou's team wrote in a report on Wednesday. Importantly, the analysts pointed out that both figures suggest a decrease in Tether's compliance ratio since mid-2024, which coincides with the rapid growth in stablecoin supply.

Anthropic still plans to launch its IPO before Thanksgiving, with a maximum valuation of $1.75 trillion and a planned fundraising of $80 billion to $100 billion.

According to a report by the Financial Times, despite a sharp sell-off in tech stocks, Anthropic still plans to proceed with its initial public offering (IPO) ahead of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. The AI startup is expected to raise between $80 billion and $100 billion in the offering, with a target valuation range of $1.25 trillion to $1.75 trillion. Market expectations center around $1.5 trillion, lower than the $2 trillion some investors had previously anticipated. Informed investors noted that Anthropic remains committed to going public as scheduled, even if it has to accept a lower valuation. The company’s third-quarter revenue grew nearly 50% to roughly $17 billion, with its latest annualized run rate (ARR) standing at approximately $81 billion, up from $65 billion at the end of July. Meanwhile, Anthropic plans to invest around $900 billion in computing power and infrastructure over the next several years, and currently holds nearly $150 billion in cash and liquid investments. JPMorgan Chase is scheduled to host an information session for potential investors on November 13. Recent sell-offs in the AI sector, regulatory headwinds facing data center construction, coupled with OpenAI’s reduction of its financing target, have all added greater market pressure to Anthropic’s IPO.

MEXC responds to the U.S. Treasury Department cutting its ties to the financial system: The exchange is in contact with regulators and its platform is operating normally.

MEXC posted on X that it has noted the relevant order issued by the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) on November 6, 2026, and is currently conducting a close review with its legal and compliance teams. The exchange stated that its platform is operating normally and user assets remain secure. MEXC added that it will take the allegations seriously and plans to engage in constructive communication with FinCEN and other relevant global regulators and authorities. Meanwhile, the platform has launched an independent review of its anti-money laundering (AML) and sanctions compliance measures, with follow-up updates to be released via official channels. Earlier, FinCEN ordered the severing of MEXC’s ties to the U.S. financial system, banning U.S. financial institutions from processing fund transfers involving the exchange. FinCEN alleged that between May 2021 and May 2026, MEXC processed at least $16 billion in funds linked to sanctions evasion, cybercrime, and other illegal activities, involving entities from Iran, North Korea, and Russia. The order was issued under Section 9714(a) of the Countering Russian Money Laundering Act and will take effect 30 days after publication in the Federal Register. U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent noted that U.S. financial institutions cannot support the Iranian regime while continuing to access the U.S. financial system.
