Nvidia is collaborating with Google, Microsoft, and over 80 equipment and infrastructure vendors to advance the 800V DC power architecture, addressing power efficiency and conversion loss issues caused by the continuous rise in AI server rack power density. The company plans to gradually roll out the solution to existing AI factories starting in the second half of 2026. Nvidia states that the current bottleneck for AI infrastructure is no longer just total power wattage, but the efficiency of electricity delivery from the grid to GPUs. The 800V DC architecture reduces power conversion steps between the grid and accelerators. Nvidia plans to launch 800V DC power racks compatible with the MGX architecture in the second half of 2026, allowing existing data centers to upgrade gradually without major renovations to buildings and power systems. For new or high-density AI factories, Nvidia plans to introduce row-based power centers in 2027, which will power multiple rack rows via overhead 800V DC busbars, with each rack row supporting up to 2MW of power. Long-term, the company plans to deploy DC Power Blocks at the facility level to convert grid power directly to 800V DC. Nvidia, Google, and Microsoft are also driving relevant standardization efforts through the Open Compute Project. As AI servers evolve from the hundreds of kilowatt range to the megawatt range, specifications for equipment including high-voltage DC/DC converters, solid-state transformers, busbars, power semiconductors, and power modules will also be upgraded accordingly.
