Top meme creator suspected of turning into a habitual crypto scammer: Pepe’s original author posts three zero-value contract addresses in a week, blames account hacking

Renowned artist and Pepe the Frog creator Matt Furie’s X account, which had remained silent for 9 months, suddenly became active in early August. Within a week, it was linked to three meme coin contract addresses in succession; most related tweets were later deleted. On August 9, the account posted, “My account is hacked, I do not endorse any shitcoins,” claiming its official website had long carried a notice to that effect. On August 1, the Matt Furie account changed its profile picture to a hoodrat image, and simultaneously posted content about meme coin HOODRAT along with its contract address (CA). After the token’s market cap surged rapidly, the tweet was deleted, and its price plummeted. On August 3, shortly after the DORK token was deployed, the Matt Furie account released its official CA, followed the project’s account, and posted an artwork linking Pepe and Dork Lord. The tweet was later removed. On-chain analyst @StandartXBT’s analysis showed the deployer quickly executed bundled buying, liquidity extraction, and selling, withdrawing significant ETH profits from the initial capital. Around August 7, the Matt Furie account posted support for meme coin project BOYZ, calling it the only token he would endorse, stating creative collaboration with the team, and adding its official website and CA. The content was widely reposted by the project team and KOLs. On August 9, the Matt Furie account posted, “The answer has always been on my website,” attaching a screenshot of its official site showing a barely noticeable line on the sidebar: “my twitter is hacked- i do not endorse any shitcoins.” On-chain analyst @StandartXBT, via monitoring web archives, found the text was not present on the official site and had no prior traces on X, casting doubt on the credibility of the account’s claim.

A South Korean lawmaker proposes postponing the taxation of virtual asset income for three years until 2030.

South Korea's People Power Party (PPP) lawmaker Jung Sung-guk plans to introduce a bill that would delay the implementation of virtual asset income taxation by three years, pushing the start date from January 1, 2027 to January 1, 2030. The lawmaker noted that the delay will allow for a full review of relevant systems, including those governing virtual asset taxation, to establish safeguards, enhance taxpayers’ predictability, and prevent institutional chaos. Under current regulations, starting January 1 next year, income from virtual asset transfers or lending will be classified as "other income" and subject to income tax. Profits exceeding 2.5 million won annually will face a 22% tax rate, consisting of 20% other income tax and 2% local income tax. Amid recent stock market volatility and surging real estate prices that have sparked widespread public criticism of the government and ruling party, the PPP appears to be seeking public support by actively proposing legislation aimed at protecting virtual asset market investors’ interests. The PPP has long held a divergent stance from the government, advocating for the abolition of this tax.
