Goldman Sachs: Japan's AI semiconductor stocks haven't "broken" after their sharp plunge, Intel's capital expenditure hike creates a buying opportunity.

Goldman Sachs Japan’s latest strategy report points out that the recent sharp sell-off in Japanese AI-related stocks has created a buying opportunity, as strong earnings prospects are expected to revive investor interest in semiconductor shares. The direct catalyst for this assessment comes from Intel: the chipmaker raised its 2026 capital expenditure outlook by approximately $3 billion, and explicitly stated it will significantly increase spending on wafer manufacturing equipment. Goldman Sachs believes that Intel’s acceleration of capacity ramp-up for advanced processes (including 18A and 14A nodes) and investment in advanced packaging will directly drive orders for closely related Japanese equipment suppliers, and the industry’s trading logic has not broken amid short-term adjustments. Under this framework, Goldman Sachs has named three Japanese semiconductor manufacturing equipment firms as top recommendations. Lasertec is listed as the industry’s top pick, with a maintained Buy rating and a target price of 70,000 yen; it remains on the Asia-Pacific High Conviction Buy List, and its high exposure to Intel’s sales will directly benefit from the advancement of advanced processes. Tokyo Electron also maintains a Buy rating, with a target price of 83,000 yen (current price is approximately 62,800 yen), as Intel’s increased fab equipment budget will support its demand for manufacturing tools. Disco, meanwhile, will benefit from Intel’s plan to expand EMIB-T advanced packaging capacity, with structural upside expected in demand for its back-end processing equipment.

Caixin: Virtual currency has become one of the few recoverable assets in the debt of Zou Shiming and his wife.

Caixin published an article titled "The Collapsed Balance Sheet of the Boxing Champion", which disclosed that for the six individual natural person creditors who are friends of boxing champion Zou Shiming and his wife, compared to other losses, funds invested in P2P and virtual currencies are the only sums that still have the possibility of recourse. Properties have been sold, luxury goods have been sold at a discount, boxing gym renovations have been written off, and cross-border projects have been shut down—all are irreversible sunk costs. However, P2P and virtual currencies are different: if the platform has not yet completed liquidation, or if the wallet address is still traceable, there is theoretically room for subrogation recovery. For example, Beijing procuratorial organs in China once used penetrating review combined with blockchain big data analysis tools to track the flow of virtual currencies, successfully recovering over 89 million yuan in illicit funds.

RL1 is a Luxembourg-registered European cooperative, with all members holding equal governance and decision-making rights. The private permissioned chain is built on infrastructure developed by German fintech firm SWIAT, which has transferred ownership of the network to the cooperative. RL1 aims to support institutional use cases including digital currencies, tokenized bonds, collateral, and blockchain settlement, while reducing fragmentation caused by financial institutions operating their own distributed ledger systems.

The South Korean Presidential Office recommends conducting a comprehensive review of South Korea's capital markets, including leveraged ETFs.

Kim Yong-beom, Director of the Policy Office at the South Korean President’s Office, provided a systematic response to the causes of the recent sharp plunge in the KOSPI index. He noted that the market is currently undergoing internal debate over AI investments: on one hand, concerns over the commercial sustainability of large-scale capital expenditures by major tech firms, with "semiconductor supply continuing to rise, while there is a lack of confidence that future demand can sustain this growth"; on the other, accelerating catch-up by China’s semiconductor industry has brought new competitive pressure. News such as the listing of ChangXin Memory Technologies and breakthroughs in China’s photolithography equipment manufacturing technology has led the market to re-examine whether South Korea’s competitive edge in memory chips remains solid. However, Kim clearly emphasized that AI demand is not temporary, stating "demand will remain steady and sustained." He argued that South Korea should seize this opportunity to accelerate factory construction, make timely investments, and strengthen R&D spending. Addressing the causes of amplified volatility in South Korea’s domestic market, Kim clearly stated that leveraged ETFs are not the sole driver. Factors including South Korea’s market structure where semiconductor and AI-related stocks account for 40% to 50%, high weights of derivatives and ETFs, and investor composition have combined to make volatility significantly higher than in overseas markets. While leveraged ETFs may cause temporary market impacts during end-of-day rebalancing, volatility sometimes emerges as early as the morning. This temporal distribution alone rules out leveraged ETFs as the sole driver. Kim recommended that South Korea’s Financial Services Commission conduct a comprehensive review of the overall capital market structure, including leveraged ETFs.
