Japan’s Lawson Convenience Stores Launches JPYC Stablecoin Payment Pilot

Japanese convenience store chain Lawson will launch a pilot program for JPYC (yen-pegged stablecoin) payments at its Tokyo Gateway City outlet in early August. The trial, run in partnership with digital asset wallet provider Hashport, marks Japan’s first experiment linking stablecoin payments to point-of-sale (POS) systems. By integrating with POS systems, purchase data including item quantities and payment timings can be synced to existing in-store management systems for administration. Lawson plans to verify the stability of the POS integration and actual payment processing time through this pilot, before deciding whether to roll out the system chain-wide.
