April 11 — An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed Friday that San Francisco police arrested a suspect earlier that day. The individual is accused of throwing an incendiary device at OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman’s residence and making threats outside the AI giant’s San Francisco headquarters. “Fortunately, no one was injured,” OpenAI said in a statement. The company added: “We greatly appreciate the San Francisco Police Department’s rapid response and thank city officials for supporting our employees’ safety. The suspect is in custody, and we’re assisting police with the investigation.” Sam Altman has not yet issued a public statement about the arrest. In a separate statement, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) said officers responded earlier Friday to a North Beach, San Francisco residence “for a fire investigation.” The suspect fled on foot, and descriptions were shared with all officers. Later, SFPD received a call and responded to a business at 1400 3rd Street for an incident where “an unknown man threatened to set the building on fire.” (OpenAI’s headquarters is located at 1455 3rd Street) Police stated: “On arrival, officers identified the male as the same suspect from the earlier incident and took him into custody immediately.” The suspect is a 20-year-old male, per reports.
