EF: In 2026, the focus shifted from speed to security, establishing strict 128-bit encryption rules

2025.12.21 09:04:52

On December 21, the Ethereum Foundation announced it will shift its focus from speed to security in 2026 and roll out strict 128-bit encryption requirements. The foundation noted that while zkEVM has made notable performance gains over the past year, some solutions rely on mathematical assumptions that lack full validation—posing a theoretical risk of on-chain state forgery. As such, the next phase’s top priorities will be bolstering formal verification, attack resistance, and foundational cryptographic security. Moving forward, the foundation will provide security audit and evaluation tools, mandating that zkEVMs meet a minimum 128-bit security strength by 2026 (aligning with current mainstream cryptographic accreditation standards). Though the new rule may slow progress for some scalability projects, the foundation stressed that long-term, attack resilience and credibility are critical to attracting institutions and high-value applications. It’s better to prioritize security first before advancing performance.

Today marks the 17th anniversary of Hal Finney's famous Bitcoin tweet "Running bitcoin"

On January 11, 2009, Hal Finney took to Twitter to post just two words: “Running bitcoin.” That brief message tied to a historic first: the next day, Satoshi Nakamoto sent him 10 BTC—marking the first Bitcoin transaction in history. While debate rages over Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity, one fact is undisputed: without Hal Finney, Bitcoin might have remained an obscure whitepaper rather than the financial revolution it’s become today. Fifteen years later, on January 11, 2024, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the first Bitcoin futures exchange-traded fund (ETF)—a timing that aligned perfectly with Finney’s landmark tweet.

The U.S. Senate Banking Committee will vote on the Clarity Act on the 15th.

As of Jan 11, the U.S. Senate Banking Committee is set to hold a hearing on cryptocurrency market structure and vote on the “CLARITY Act” on Jan 15 at 10:00 am EST, per the Senate’s schedule. The legislation aims to curb wash trading, deceptive practices, false trading volume, and mandate reserve proof—efforts intended to address longstanding gaps in cryptocurrency regulation. Some analysts project that if the act passes, market manipulation could decline by 70% to 80%, while large institutional funds may flow into crypto markets at an accelerated pace by 2026. Should the committee vote pass, the bill will advance to a full Senate vote, then return to the House for final approval before being sent to President Trump for enactment.
