The US OCC Allows Banks to Hold Cryptocurrency to Pay Network Fees

2025.11.19 08:48:14

On November 19th, as reported by The Block, the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) issued Interpretive Letter 1186 on Tuesday. This letter confirmed that banks are allowed to hold specific cryptocurrencies in order to pay for blockchain network fees. The OCC specifically mentioned the Ethereum network and pointed out that Ethereum transactions require ETH to pay gas fees. Therefore, banks can hold the necessary cryptocurrency on their balance sheets to cover these fees. The guidance stated, "We have concluded that the activities described are a permissible form of bank-permissible banking." It further explained that not taking such actions could lead to "costs and significant risks related to operational complexity, asset price volatility, and transaction delays."
