The Trump administration is seeking to transfer the California Governor's tariff lawsuit to New York, arguing that the International Trade Court has exclusive jurisdiction.

2025.04.18 14:16:18

On April 18th, the Trump administration is aiming to transfer California Governor Newsom's legal challenge against the U.S. tariff plan from the San Francisco Federal Court to the New York International Trade Court. Lawyers from the U.S. Department of Justice submitted a request on Thursday to remove this case from Newsom's jurisdiction, arguing that the trade court has "exclusive jurisdiction" over disputes related to tariffs. The Democratic governor of this most populous state is regarded as a potential presidential candidate in 2028. On Wednesday, Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta jointly sued the president. They strive to prevent Trump from employing emergency powers to impose extensive tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and other countries. Newsom and Bonta pointed out the harm to California consumers and businesses, including agriculture and the entertainment industry. In economic terms, California can be regarded as the "fifth-largest economy in the world." Trump's tariffs also face at least three other legal challenges. Two of them were initiated by conservative legal advocacy groups representing small businesses, and the third was brought by members of Montana's Blackfeet tribe. (Jinse)
