An abbot of a temple in Taiwan, China embezzled 300 million yuan in charitable donations and used cryptocurrency for money laundering, with nearly 800 kilograms of gold and silver unearthed outside his meditation room.

According to Taiwanese media reports, Donglin Temple, a well-known temple in Yilan, Taiwan region of China, has been embroiled in a case of embezzling alms and money laundering. Abbot Zhang Qingyu and his son Zhang Weifu, who has become a monk, are suspected of long-term embezzlement of believers' donations and temple property, with the amount involved exceeding 300 million New Taiwan dollars (about 60.77 million yuan). They concealed illegal proceeds by purchasing cryptocurrencies, gold, silver, and surrounding farmhouses. The Yilan District Prosecutors Office launched a search on November 2, digging more than a dozen iron boxes from the gravel ground outside the abbot's meditation room, seizing about 70 kilograms of gold and over 700 kilograms of silver, totaling nearly 800 kilograms with a market value of over 330 million New Taiwan dollars (about 67.24 million yuan). The case originated from a report by a believer's family member, who alleged his mother was defrauded of more than 300 million New Taiwan dollars by Zhang Qingyu under various pretexts while practicing at Donglin Temple between 2010 and 2014. Investigations also found temple funds were long controlled solely by Zhang Qingyu, with part of the alms and temple assets transferred to private accounts. On November 3, the Yilan District Court ruled to detain Zhang Qingyu and Zhang Weifu on suspicion of public welfare embezzlement and violation of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, banning them from meeting visitors. The executive director of the involved Dharma Protector Association and the abbot's wife were released on bail of 1 million New Taiwan dollars each.

Should Bitcoin surpass $77,000, the cumulative liquidation amount of short positions on major centralized exchanges (CEXs) will reach $958 million.

According to Coinglass data, if Bitcoin breaks through $77,000, the cumulative short liquidation intensity on major centralized exchanges (CEXs) will reach $958 million. Conversely, if Bitcoin falls below $75,000, the cumulative long liquidation intensity on major CEXs will hit $345 million. BlockBeats Note: The liquidation chart does not display the exact number of contracts pending liquidation or the exact value of contracts being liquidated. The bars on the chart actually represent the relative importance (i.e., intensity) of each liquidation cluster compared to adjacent clusters. Thus, the chart illustrates the degree of impact the underlying asset’s price will face when it reaches a certain level. A higher "liquidation bar" signals that once the price hits that level, it will trigger a more intense reaction driven by liquidity waves.

Trump said the U.S. military launched a new round of limited strikes against Iran on Friday, destroying its air defense systems.

According to the Associated Press, U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. military launched a new limited strike against Iran on Friday, targeting an Iranian air defense system. Trump claimed Iran had just built the system, which U.S. forces destroyed in roughly 5 to 15 minutes, describing the operation as a "small-scale" strike. Iranian state media reported two explosions in the Suza area of Iran’s Qeshm Island. Earlier, the U.S. military had carried out so-called "defensive strikes" near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, targeting Qeshm Island, Hengam Island, and the mainland coastal area of Bandar Abbas. Friday’s operation marked the first U.S. military strike against Iran since the U.S. Republican Party lost control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections. Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command announced a reward of up to $20 million, plus potential witness relocation, for information on Iran’s nuclear program, including details on nuclear facilities, equipment, relevant personnel, and their movements. Trump noted that the U.S. and Iran are still holding talks via intermediaries, but major differences remain over the nuclear issue. Iran has demanded the U.S. lift port blockades, cancel sanctions, unfreeze assets, compensate for war damages, and end regional hostilities. Recently, countries including Qatar, Iraq, and Egypt have stepped up diplomatic mediation to de-escalate U.S.-Iran tensions and prevent further escalation of the situation.

Iranian hardliners, leveraging Donald Trump's midterm election defeat, are demanding the U.S. pay a higher price, with their negotiating stance likely to harden further.

According to CNN, after former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Republican Party suffered major losses in the U.S. midterm elections, Iranian hardliners believe the U.S. government, facing domestic political pressure, is seizing the opportunity to demand Washington pay a higher price before ending the Iran war, and oppose Iran’s negotiating team making concessions to the U.S. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned this week that no sign of submission should be shown. Iranian hardline media outlets have called for continued pressure on the U.S., arguing that Trump should not be allowed to end the war easily through a hastily reached deal. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance previously acknowledged that one of the reasons for the Republican Party’s election losses was the Iran war. An Iran analyst at the International Crisis Group noted that the election results may further harden Tehran’s negotiating position, making it less willing to make concessions to the U.S. on its nuclear program. Iran previously put forward seven conditions, including ending the war on all fronts, receiving reparations, U.S. troop withdrawal, and lifting sanctions, and has demanded that the Strait of Hormuz only be opened after these conditions are met. While Iranian hardliners publicly advocate for continued confrontation, analysts believe Iran’s leadership still hopes to end the war through negotiations while retaining stronger regional deterrence and strategic leverage. As military operations on both sides remain deadlocked and negotiations have made limited progress, the risk of renewed conflict escalation persists.

Trilateral talks between the U.S., Russia and Ukraine will resume in Abu Dhabi next week. Trump expressed optimism that a major agreement could be reached, while Ukraine does not anticipate a breakthrough.

The U.S., Russia and Ukraine plan to restart working-level talks in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from November 10 to 11, marking the first face-to-face meeting between the three sides in nine months. U.S. President Donald Trump said the parties are "very close" to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and a "major agreement" covering Ukraine and even the entire Europe is expected to be reached. However, Ukraine is taking a cautious stance on the talks' outcome. Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's President's Office, said he does not expect a breakthrough at the meeting, but considers the resumption of face-to-face talks as progress in itself. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized that security guarantees, de-escalation of the Black Sea situation, an energy ceasefire, repatriation of Ukrainian children and prisoner-of-war exchanges are Ukraine's priority issues, reiterating that no party can make decisions on Ukraine-related matters without Ukraine's participation. Currently, the Russia-Ukraine sides still have huge differences on core issues including territory and security guarantees, and battlefield clashes have not ceased. Meanwhile, Europe continues to advance military and economic aid to Ukraine. There remains significant uncertainty as to whether the talks can make substantive progress.
