Citi: Middle East situation dictates gold’s price trajectory; easing tensions could push gold to $5,000, while a stalemate would send it down to $3,500.

Citigroup has characterized gold's outlook as a two-scenario framework, noting that Middle East tensions will be the key variable determining gold price movements. If the Strait of Hormuz returns to normal navigation and regional conflicts de-escalate, falling oil prices may prompt the U.S. Federal Reserve to pivot from rate hikes to rate cuts, boosting gold investment demand. Citigroup forecasts a 0-3 month gold price target of $4,500 per ounce, with a potential rise to $5,000 per ounce over 6-12 months. The bank has set this easing scenario as its baseline, assigning it a 60% probability; if the U.S. and Iran reach a rapid agreement and oil prices plunge, gold prices could rally further. Conversely, if Middle East conflicts persist, energy supplies are disrupted and inflation surges, the Fed may maintain tight monetary policy, putting downward pressure on gold. The bear case scenario, which has a 30% probability, carries a target price of $3,500 per ounce. Citigroup also noted that long-term supportive factors for gold remain intact, including central banks' continued gold purchases, de-dollarization trends, and inflows into gold ETFs. Gold currently accounts for around 33% of global central bank reserves, the highest level in nearly 30 years. However, gold holders have accumulated roughly $12 trillion in paper gains over the past 3.5 years. If investors initiate asset rebalancing, even small sell-offs could trigger significant market disruption, exposing gold prices to the same sharp volatility seen in Bitcoin.

Micron suspends its $4.5 billion factory construction plan in Taoyuan, with labor disputes threatening the expansion of AI storage chip production.

According to Bloomberg, Micron Technology has largely suspended plans to build a new memory chip plant in Taoyuan, Taiwan, due to ongoing labor disputes with employee unions. The project carries an investment budget of $3 billion to $4.5 billion and was originally slated to begin operations in 2028. Sources familiar with the matter noted Micron fears the prior union agreement could be overturned, with only minimal site security maintenance work ongoing and construction set to freeze shortly. The dispute arises from employees’ demands to share profit growth driven by the AI boom: the Taoyuan union is pushing for Micron to allocate 15% of its operating profit to global staff, and wants all-cash bonuses instead of a portion in stock. While Micron struck a deal with the larger Taichung union in October, some employees are unhappy with the terms, and the Taoyuan union is seeking to expand its membership to push for renegotiations. The planned facility was set to produce high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DRAM, using advanced equipment from ASML. Taiwan currently accounts for around 60% of Micron’s DRAM output, serves as a key HBM production base, and employs about 15,000 people there. The suspension could disrupt Micron’s long-term expansion plans in Taiwan and add uncertainty to the already tight AI memory chip market. Micron stated its existing operations in Taiwan are normal and it will ensure customer business continuity, but did not directly comment on the Taoyuan project halt. Taiwan’s economic affairs department said the government will assist Micron in resolving differences with the union and advance the investment plan.

The 2028 U.S. presidential election is heating up early, with JD Vance reflecting on the Iran War and several Democratic governors in the spotlight.

Shortly after the U.S. midterm elections concluded, both major U.S. political parties have already begun positioning for the 2028 presidential election. For the Republican Party, Vice President JD Vance publicly linked the midterm election losses to the Iran war, proposing four key tasks: ending the war, addressing cost-of-living and inflation, upholding the "America First" agenda, and adjusting U.S.-Israel relations, in an attempt to respond to voters' dissatisfaction with the Trump administration's foreign policy. However, Vance has not yet announced his presidential run, nor has he publicly broken with former President Donald Trump. Figures like Marco Rubio and Ron DeSantis are also listed as potential Republican candidates. For the Democratic Party, its midterm election gains have boosted the political standing of several party figures. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and California Governor Gavin Newsom have all drawn attention. Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff, following his re-election, has also been included in discussions for a 2028 presidential run, though he has previously stated he has no current plans to run. To date, neither party has formally launched its presidential candidate nomination process. Cost of living, inflation, the Iran war, immigration, and U.S. foreign policy are emerging as core issues for potential candidates to rally intra-party support and win voter attention.
