Mark Zuckerberg Teams Up with Demis Hassabis: $1.8 Billion to Develop 'Virtual Cells'

Beating AI News Flash: The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, the biomedical research institute founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, announced an expansion of its Virtual Biology Initiative (VBI). Google DeepMind, Meta, and Isomorphic Labs have joined the collaboration, with total funding, data, and research resources from all parties amounting to $1.8 billion. Isomorphic Labs is the AI drug discovery firm established by Demis Hassabis. The initiative aims to train AI to predict the behavior of living cells—for example, when a drug is applied to a cell, AI can forecast the changes that will occur. Researchers will then be able to conduct preliminary tests on computers to decide which experiments are worth carrying out in labs, accelerating new drug development. The biggest current challenge is the lack of training data. Biohub said existing large datasets only have records of hundreds of millions of cells, while accurate predictive models may need billions or even trillions of cells. The team expects to release the first batch of data in about a year, and aims to develop reliable predictive models within five years. Google DeepMind, Meta, and Isomorphic Labs collectively contribute $300 million. The U.S. Department of Energy plans to invest over $500 million over five years, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides data resources accumulated from its prior investments of more than $500 million. The data will eventually be open to researchers worldwide. However, commercial funders can exclusively use data generated from their contributions for one year before making it public; government-funded data is not subject to this restriction.

UK Announces New Round of Russia Sanctions, Targeting Crypto Platforms Over Sanctions Evasion The UK has unveiled a new round of sanctions on Russia, with 38 designations targeting three cryptocurrency trading platforms, two payment platforms, one associated individual, and a Moscow-based bank, on suspicion of helping Russia evade financial sanctions. Cryptomus and Heleket are listed as aliases of the same entity, Xeltox Enterprises Ltd (also known as Certa Payments Ltd, registered in Canada); TokenSpot CJSC is registered in Kyrgyzstan. The same sanction batch also includes Kyrgyz payment platform Tsunami Payments LLC. On-chain analytics firm TRM Labs said TokenSpot has transferred over $950 million total to sanctioned platforms Grinex, Garantex, and the Kremlin-backed A7 network. TRM assessed in April that Cryptomus and Heleket have operational links, adding Heleket is likely a parallel service launched by Cryptomus to continue processing large-scale funds. On October 6, TRM further determined TokenSpot shares wallet infrastructure with Grinex, operating under the same activity set. TRM’s April data also shows that in on-chain transactions between Cryptomus and Garantex, Cryptomus received over $204 million and sent out $101 million.

Pyth DAO passes a proposal to allocate 100% of its product revenue to increase holdings of PYTH.

Pyth DAO has announced the passage of proposal OP-PIP-136, committing to allocate 100% of funds received from its Pyth products to purchasing PYTH tokens for its reserves, covering Pyth Pro subscriptions, Listing as a Service, the Data Marketplace, and Pyth Indices. Previously, reserves had conducted monthly open-market purchases since December 2025, using one-third of the DAO’s non-PYTH balance per transaction and requiring separate votes for each purchase. The new policy replaces this with a one-time long-term authorization, and existing non-PYTH assets will also be included in the same purchase path. The first batch of purchases under the new rule was executed on September 30, with the DAO’s current PYTH reserve holdings standing at approximately 42 million tokens.
