Chainalysis reports that global potential taxable cryptocurrency activity will exceed $457 billion in 2025, with the Crypto Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) covering only 14% of the total.

Chainalysis has released a report showing that the scale of global on-chain potential taxable cryptocurrency activity in 2025 reached at least $457 billion, covering gains from centralized and decentralized exchanges, plus income from mining, staking, lending, gambling, crypto payments, and other sources. Since transactions, staking, and lending activities within centralized exchanges cannot be directly observed on-chain, this figure may actually underestimate the size of the global crypto economy. By region, North America’s 2025 potential taxable crypto activity hit $134.6 billion, the EU $125.1 billion, and East Asia $54.7 billion. The U.S. ranked first among individual countries at $112.6 billion, followed by Germany at $24.1 billion. Chainalysis noted that a significant share of global crypto activity remains outside the scope of traditional tax information reporting systems. The OECD launched the Crypto Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) in 2022, with dozens of countries committing to start exchanging relevant information from 2027, and more expected to join in 2028 or 2029. However, only around 14% of 2025’s global on-chain potential taxable activity falls under CARF’s coverage; the remaining ~86% involves activities including DEX trades, peer-to-peer transfers, self-custody wallets, on-chain mining and staking income, lending income, and crypto payments. Additionally, CARF is not a retroactive system, and issues such as missing cost bases and transactions on offshore platforms may prevent tax authorities from accurately calculating taxable gains. Chainalysis said blockchain analytics can help tax authorities directly observe on-chain activities, track fund flows between wallets, identify transactions on offshore and decentralized platforms, reconstruct digital asset cost bases, and uncover income sources like mining, staking, lending, and liquidity provision, thereby filling the coverage gaps of CARF and traditional tax information reporting systems.

Hugging Face open-sources a $399 robot duck that can get back up on its own after falling and is retrainable.

Beating AI Express: Hugging Face’s open-source robotics subsidiary Pollen Robotics has unveiled Microduck, a $399 bipedal robot. Standing just 25 cm tall and weighing around 800 grams, it integrates 15 motors, a camera, LiDAR, and two IMUs. Out of the box, it can walk, sit, grasp objects, kick a ball, self-right after falling, and even glide when fitted with rollers. Microduck’s movements can be retrained independently: users first train actions via reinforcement learning in the MuJoCo physics simulator, then deploy the trained policy to the physical robot. The SDK, simulator, and full reinforcement learning training stack are all open-source, with the entire software released under the Apache 2.0 license. Pre-orders for Microduck are now open, with the first batch scheduled to ship before Christmas 2026.

AI has uncovered multiple real vulnerabilities, and Core Lightning has issued an urgent security advisory.

The Bitcoin Core Lightning development team has issued an urgent warning, noting that multiple genuine vulnerabilities have been identified in a large number of AI-generated security bug reports, urging Lightning Network node operators to take action. Core Lightning advises node operators who cannot upgrade immediately not to shut down their devices, but instead restart the software in "--offline" mode. This mode cuts off the node’s communication with other Lightning Network nodes, suspends payment sending, receiving, and routing, while still allowing continuous monitoring of the Bitcoin blockchain to prevent risks such as payment channels being closed due to outdated states. Core Lightning stated that its development team has received a large volume of AI-generated vulnerability reports since early August, some of which have been verified as genuine. The developers have not yet disclosed specific details of the vulnerabilities, and plan to keep them confidential for two weeks after releasing a fixed version before making the information public, to allow node operators to complete upgrades. This is the second AI-related Lightning Network security emergency this month. Earlier this month, BTCPay Server suffered a vulnerability that led to the exposure of some Lightning Network node credentials and subsequent fund theft. Additionally, the Bitcoin Red Team recently used an AI model to scan 390 Bitcoin code repositories, identifying nearly 5,000 potential issues in approximately 27 hours, with 85 classified as critical vulnerabilities.
