Ethereum researchers have released an early draft proposing to restructure the validator deposit contract to support varying key lengths and multiple cryptographic signature schemes, laying the groundwork for future adoption of post-quantum signatures. The existing contract hardcodes BLS key sizes, meaning even if developers identify new post-quantum schemes, the network cannot currently integrate them directly. The draft will tag each deposit with the cryptographic system used, assigning tag 0 to BLS and reserving all other tags for future schemes. If approved, new signature schemes can be integrated alongside BLS; Ethereum could later vote to permanently stop accepting new BLS deposits, though validators already staking with BLS keys will not exit immediately.
