According to Bloomberg, JPMorgan Chase stated that SK Hynix may allocate at least $130 billion in additional shareholder returns by 2027. The South Korean chipmaker earlier announced a 40 trillion won (roughly $29 billion) share repurchase plan, and plans to raise the proportion of cumulative free cash flow dedicated to shareholder returns from "no more than 50%" to "at least 50%" between 2025 and 2027. JPMorgan analyst Jay Kwon noted in a report that the key to the 40 trillion won repurchase plan is SK Hynix’s raised shareholder return commitment cap. Under the new policy, the company is projected to deliver "at least 180 trillion won in additional shareholder returns" by 2027, equal to 16% of its current total market capitalization, which is expected to support its stock price following recent declines. Kwon commented: "We believe the worst is behind us, and expect stock sentiment to gradually improve in the medium term, recommending investors to increase their holdings of the stock." He added that the repurchase plan was unveiled earlier than market expectations. SK Hynix’s stock rose as much as 13% Thursday on the Korea Exchange. The company announced it would repurchase and cancel up to 24 million shares, a move marking the largest share cancellation plan in the history of South Korean listed firms. SK Hynix’s gain also lifted the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI), with rival Samsung Electronics’ stock climbing as much as 10%. Market participants believe higher shareholder return expectations could drive a rebound in South Korean memory chip stocks. The memory sector has recently pulled back due to concerns over the sustainability of AI-related investments and competitive pressure from China. Currently, SK Hynix’s stock remains more than 40% below its all-time high set in June.

According to Bitget data, South Korea’s KOSPI index closed 381.41 points higher on Thursday, August 20, notching a 5.89% gain to end at 6852.58 points. The core change lies in a major adjustment to the distribution method of performance bonuses. The proposed preliminary deal includes a 6.3% wage increase, and revises the existing excess profit sharing (PS) system: 40% will be paid in cash in the current year, while the remaining 60% will be disbursed in the form of company stock.
