Preview of the Federal Reserve Interest Rate Decision: Inflation Concerns and Policy Divisions Take Center Stage

2026.08.20 00:59:12

Tim Duy, chief US economist at SGH Macro Advisors, said that it has become more common in recent years for multiple Federal Reserve officials to dissent on interest rate decisions. Especially during periods when the economy faces multiple pressures and the policy path is unclear, sharp disagreements among officials can lead to more dissenting votes. As for the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting minutes, Duy noted that the core focus of the market will be how widespread officials' concerns about inflation are. He pointed out that at the time, inflation appeared significantly above the Fed's target, and policymakers were worried that it would not quickly fall back to the target level. Meanwhile, the labor market was seen as having stabilized, leading some officials to strongly argue that the Fed should raise interest rates to curb inflationary pressures. Therefore, the market will focus on how many Fed officials actually share this view, and whether concerns about inflation have formed a consensus among a broader group of policymakers. The degree of disagreement among officials over the policy path will also serve as an important clue for judging future interest rate trends. (Jin10)

Oil pipeline shutdown, delayed meeting and vessel attacks lift international crude oil prices by 3% in early trading.

According to Bitget market data, during Asian morning trading, both WTI crude oil and Brent crude oil once saw their intraday gains expand to 3%. Last Thursday, a drone launched from Iraq struck Saudi Arabia’s east-west oil pipeline, forcing the Saudi government to shut down this critical crude artery. Riyadh did not disclose the extent of pipeline damage or the duration of the shutdown. Additionally, a diplomatic meeting between Iran and Gulf Arab countries originally scheduled for Monday in Oman to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz was suddenly postponed following the pipeline attack. The Saudi pipeline has a daily transportation capacity of 7 million barrels and plays a key role in mitigating severe oil supply disruptions caused by Middle East conflicts. Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center stated that the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains precarious; another oil tanker was attacked on Sunday, leading to a severe fire on board.

According to foreign media reports, U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday appeared to reject calls from several top artificial intelligence (AI) executives to slow the development of AI models. During an interview at the Irish Open golf tournament, Trump said: "We are the most advanced country in the world, and frankly, I want this situation to stay that way. Whoever wins AI wins everything." Trump added: "I think there are a lot of negative forces pushing this thing that shouldn’t even be brought up. They’re raising issues that simply won’t happen."

Data: If the U.S. Federal Reserve raises interest rates by another 75 basis points, annual interest costs on short-term Treasuries alone will rise by approximately $500 billion.

The US currently has approximately $7 trillion in short-term Treasury securities outstanding, with around $6.1 trillion set to mature within one year. Including other maturing Treasury instruments, roughly $7.5 trillion in tradable US government debt will need refinancing in 2026, while another $4 trillion and $3.5 trillion will mature in 2027 and 2028 respectively. If the Federal Reserve raises interest rates by an additional 75 basis points, annual interest expenses on short-term Treasuries alone could rise by about $50 billion, equivalent to 0.15% of GDP. Additionally, most of these Treasuries will be refinanced at market rates higher than their original issuance rates, meaning the US is facing a round of far more expensive large-scale refinancing.
