Japan’s Lawson Convenience Stores Launches JPYC Stablecoin Payment Pilot

Japanese convenience store chain Lawson will launch a pilot program for JPYC (yen-pegged stablecoin) payments at its Tokyo Gateway City outlet in early August. The trial, run in partnership with digital asset wallet provider Hashport, marks Japan’s first experiment linking stablecoin payments to point-of-sale (POS) systems. Bank of Thailand requires individuals to provide proof of source for cash deposits exceeding 5 million Thai baht, and has stepped up monitoring of stablecoin transactions.

According to local Thai media reports, Thailand will require individuals to verify the source of funds when depositing cash exceeding 5 million Thai baht (approximately $150,000). This measure expands the compliance obligations of commercial banks in cash networks, bulk currency exchange, precious metals trading, and suspicious stablecoin transactions, directly preventing regulated entities from facilitating systemic corruption or the shadow economy. Additionally, the Bank of Thailand and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are conducting joint audits, focusing on Tether (USDT), to identify and block illicit fund flows. This crackdown also includes tightened oversight of precious metals trading, requiring banks to report suspicious patterns such as rapid digital purchases and same-day physical withdrawals to combat money laundering.

Escalating tensions in the Middle East have pushed oil prices higher, while growing expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike have led markets to focus on Tuesday's U.S. CPI data.

After the U.S. launched a new round of military operations against Iran, international oil prices rose, U.S. Treasury yields climbed, and uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz further intensified market volatility. Driven by rising oil prices lifting inflation expectations, markets have increased bets on further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, while gold and U.S. stock index futures declined. Going forward, markets will closely watch the U.S. June CPI data scheduled for release at 20:30 Beijing time on Tuesday (July 14), along with congressional testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and the kickoff of the U.S. earnings season. The CPI data will be one of the most significant macro events this week, and may further shape market expectations for the Federal Reserve’s subsequent monetary policy path.
