The South Korean Supreme Court has ruled that Bitcoin held by a trading platform is subject to seizure.

2026.01.09 17:09:49

**January 9th Update** As reported by Cointelegraph, the Supreme Court of Korea ruled on December 11, 2025, that Bitcoin held on centralized exchanges qualifies as a seizable asset under the country’s criminal procedure law. The court upheld the seizure of 55.6 Bitcoins belonging to a money laundering suspect, recognizing Bitcoin’s independent management capability, tradability, and economic value. This decision means Korean users holding Bitcoin on platforms like Upbit and Bithumb face clearer legal risks: cryptocurrencies tied to criminal activity can be directly frozen and seized on exchanges. Exchanges are now under pressure to promptly comply with search warrants, enforce strict Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols, and implement robust tracking systems.

Four U.S. newspapers sue Brave: scraping news to sell to AI companies and helping users bypass paywalls

Beating AI Flash News: The New York Times, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and Orlando Sentinel have filed two separate lawsuits against Brave, alleging that the company scraped news content without authorization, then provided it via paid APIs to AI firms including Anthropic, Perplexity, and Mistral for model training or generating user responses. Brave’s LLM Context API can directly return full webpage text. Plaintiffs’ tests found that for a 1,295-word New York Times article, the API returned 1,291 words, nearly the full text. Brave’s in-house AI search is also accused of mass copying news content. The browser also features a built-in paywall blocker that helps users bypass some media’s paywalls. Brave’s search engine has indexed over 30 billion web pages, but its crawlers do not identify themselves, instead masquerading as regular browsers to access sites. Brave explained that some websites only allow Google to crawl content, so it uses this approach to avoid being blocked. Previously, Brave had sued News Corp, parent company of The Wall Street Journal, arguing that search indexes and summaries constitute fair use. News Corp filed a counterclaim in July this year. Now the four newspapers are seeking a court order to halt Brave’s relevant practices and award damages.

Separately, the account has another trading plan on the upside. Early this morning, it also placed 2,999 regular sell orders at $1,200, worth roughly $3.599 million, which is about 6.1% above the current price, with the plan to add more short positions after a price rebound. If this sell order is filled first, the existing short position will expand to approximately 10,100 ZEC.

Senior Iranian official: The U.S. and Iran are still far from reaching an agreement to end the war, and Tehran will not accept excessive demands from the U.S.

Senior Iranian officials said mediators are working to narrow the differences between Tehran and Washington, but the two sides remain far from reaching an agreement to end the conflict. The official added that Tehran will not accept excessive U.S. demands and is prepared to strongly respond to U.S. strikes in the Middle East and beyond. For the U.S. to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, it must meet Tehran's conditions before nuclear negotiations can begin. (Jinshi)
