Bitcoin Mining Full Cost Has Soared to $138,000, Mining Firms Are Massively Shifting to AI/HPC Business

2025.12.07 09:50:45

On December 7, CryptoRank released new data showing the average cash cost for a mining firm to produce one Bitcoin has climbed to $74,600. When including depreciation and stock-based compensation (SBC), total costs hit $137,800. With the total network hashrate crossing the symbolic 1 ZH/s milestone, competition has intensified sharply—pushing miner profitability into a steep decline. This trend is leading many publicly traded mining companies to redirect capacity toward higher-margin businesses like AI/HPC (High-Performance Computing), instead of doubling down on traditional Bitcoin mining. The industry is now splitting into two key models: • Infrastructure Providers: Repurposing mining data centers for high-margin computing operations • Traditional Miners: Struggling to stay afloat in an increasingly competitive, near-zero-profit landscape

Metaplanet completes first batch of BitBonds issuance, with a total scale of approximately 200 million yen.

According to a post by Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich, Metaplanet has launched the "BitBonds" bond issuance program and completed its first batch of issuances. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary Metaplanet Securities, the company issued the 21st to 24th series of unsecured ordinary bonds under Japan’s small-scale private placement system, totaling approximately 200 million yen. Gerovich noted that the small-scale issuance is primarily a pilot, designed to establish the framework for BitBonds’ subsequent issuance, distribution, and management. BitBonds are unsecured ordinary bonds and are not collateralized by Bitcoin held by Metaplanet. Metaplanet will leverage its Bitcoin reserve balance sheet and its subsidiary securities firm’s capabilities in financial product issuance, distribution, and management to further build out its related financial product platform.

Former senior Japanese foreign exchange diplomat: Yen intervention could resume at any time, and the Bank of Japan may raise interest rates in September.

Mitsuhiro Furusawa, a former senior Japanese foreign exchange diplomat and ex-deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stated that at current exchange rate levels, the yen is clearly too weak and is damaging Japan’s economy by pushing up import costs. He noted that if the yen returns to its level before last month’s coordinated intervention, Japan and the U.S. could conduct another joint foreign exchange market intervention at any time, with no fixed target level such as 160 or 162 yen. Furusawa added that intervention only buys time, and a more fundamental solution is for the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to accelerate its pace of interest rate hikes. He forecasts the BOJ will raise interest rates in September, followed by another hike in December or January next year. He estimates the BOJ ultimately aims to lift rates to around 1.5% to 1.75%, a projection based on his estimate of the neutral interest rate, which ranges from 1.1% to 2.5%. If the economy maintains its growth momentum, further rate hikes could be possible in the fiscal year starting April 2027. (Jinshi)
