Bhutan is in the process of migrating its National Identity System from Polygon to Ethereum

On October 14th, as reported by Cointelegraph, Bhutan is in the midst of migrating its self-sovereign identity system from Polygon to Ethereum. This enables nearly 800,000 residents to verify their identities and gain access to government services. The integration with Ethereum has been successfully completed, and it is anticipated that the migration of all resident credentials will be finished in the first quarter of 2026. The Chairperson of the Ethereum Foundation, Aya Miyaguchi, attended the launch ceremony along with Ethereum's co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk. Miyaguchi stated that this is the world's first national-level Ethereum identity system integration case. Prior to this, Bhutan had been operating its national identity system on Polygon since August 2024, with Hyperledger Indy being used previously.
