Yen depreciation benefits materialize, spurring a wave of upward earnings revisions by Japanese companies.

According to Japanese media reports, the weakening yen is delivering significant commercial benefits to Japanese multinational corporations, with many firms lifting their earnings forecasts in the latest earnings season. Despite recent intervention measures by the Japanese government, the market expects the yen will remain under pressure. As a result, companies with a large share of overseas operations—including Toyota Motor, Honda Motor, Sony, and Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the parent of Muji—have all raised their performance outlooks. Okasan Securities’ report shows that among roughly 1,600 TOPIX constituent companies, 159 have lifted their fiscal year earnings forecasts since July 1, while only 12 have cut theirs. The overall proportion of firms adjusting their performance forecasts stands at 86%, the highest level since fiscal 2016.
