Per market data from BIT (bit.com), the Nasdaq index has turned positive, now rising 0.25% after earlier sliding more than 0.5%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has also reversed course to gain, after previously falling over 2%. Nvidia is up nearly 2%, hitting a 2-month high, with its weekly advance topping 11%.

JPMorgan Chase CEO: Market leverage remains at elevated levels, but says it does not yet pose a systemic threat.

According to CNBC, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned that leverage in current financial markets remains at elevated levels, with margin debt hitting an all-time high. Some borrowings are not directly classified as margin debt, but hidden in prime brokers, hedge funds, ETFs and U.S. Treasury arbitrage strategies. Dimon noted that high leverage increases the likelihood that a single investor or fund could quickly disrupt the market and trigger broader volatility. Recently, AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness faced margin calls after losing bets on leveraged tech stocks, forcing it to liquidate most of its listed stock portfolio. However, Dimon did not label the current leverage level as a systemic threat, stating that the overall market is still capable of absorbing the failure of individual institutions. He emphasized that the current environment differs from the 2008 financial crisis, when the real shock stemmed from impending massive losses in the mortgage market, not just leverage itself. Dimon also said that when market volatility rises, clearing firms and banks typically demand more collateral. At the same time, government deficits, infrastructure investment and global rearmament could reignite inflationary pressure and underpin higher long-term interest rates.

Western Digital's Chief Product Officer: AI storage should not rely entirely on flash memory, and HDDs remain the foundation for long-term storage of large volumes of data.

Western Digital Chief Product Officer Ahmed Shihab published an article stating that the core of AI storage competition lies not in simply pursuing the fastest storage medium, but in the ability to sustainably scale capacity at an affordable cost. He noted that many architectures function well in early stages, but when data volumes expand from several petabytes to hundreds of petabytes or even exabytes, they may face issues due to runaway costs. Flash storage is ideal for high-performance, low-latency use cases such as model weights, GPU spillover, KV caches, and session contexts; HDDs, meanwhile, are better suited for large-scale, long-term, cost-sensitive data including training corpora, logs, checkpoints, compliance records, synthetic data, and inference outputs. He concluded: "Flash handles the present, HDD handles the entire lifecycle." At AI scale, storage costs themselves become an architectural challenge. Storing large batches of data on high-performance media long-term will crowd out budgets for computing, networking, power, and personnel. For many bulk storage workloads, the question is not whether flash can store data, but whether customers can afford the full cost of using flash over the long term. Future AI storage will not be dominated by a single technology; instead, it should be designed in layers based on performance, cost, power consumption, density, reliability, and data lifecycle. He stressed that this is not a competition between flash and HDDs, but rather matching the appropriate medium for different workloads from the outset—otherwise, the architecture could undermine business sustainability as it scales.
