Mastercard launches cross-border stablecoin payment pilot program with Borderless.

Mastercard and stablecoin network Borderless will launch a pilot project to explore whether Mastercard’s Crypto Credential standard framework can provide compliance signals for cross-border stablecoin payments, helping participants integrate the framework into their own approval, compliance and risk processes. Kevin Lehtiniitty, co-founder and CEO of Borderless, said that Mastercard is applying the correspondent banking trust model to digital asset payments in this initiative, with Crypto Credential serving as a governance and verification layer, and Mastercard itself will not participate in fund processing or settlement.

According to the Associated Press, two Gulf region officials stated that Iranian and Omani negotiators have finalized a draft agreement on the Strait of Hormuz, which is now pending final approval from Iran’s Supreme Leader. Earlier today, reports emerged that the U.S., Iran, and Oman are nearing a 60-day interim deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Under the proposed framework, vessels entering the Persian Gulf will transit through Iranian waters, while those exiting the Strait of Hormuz bound for the Arabian Sea will use Omani waters. No transit or shipping fees will be levied during the agreement’s initial 60-day term. The parties also agreed to clear naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz area to restore safer shipping conditions and lay the groundwork for negotiations on a subsequent long-term transit arrangement.
