South Korea's financial regulators today decided that if overheating in single-stock leverage products fails to subside, additional regulatory measures including individual investment caps will be introduced. A key proposal under review is to limit individual stock leverage investments to no more than 20% of total financial investment portfolio value. Rhee Ee-won, chairman of South Korea's Financial Services Commission (FSC), said at a forum today that the policy effects of supplementary measures such as strengthened initial margin requirements—set to take effect on July 31—will be closely monitored as a priority. Rhee also noted that if demand does not cool sufficiently, additional measures will be researched and prepared in advance. It is understood that the proposal under development implements aggregate management rules, capping individual stock leverage exposure at 20% of an individual’s total financial investment.
