Federal Reserve Meeting Minutes: Some Participants View a Rate Hike as Necessary, But Support Keeping Interest Rates Unchanged

The minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s June meeting show that officials’ concerns over high inflation are growing. While officials worry the scope of price hikes is expanding and may require interest rate increases, they followed the lead of Fed Chair Walsh in issuing a more concise policy statement. At the June 16-17 meeting, a small number of participants saw grounds for an immediate rate hike, but the broader discussion was evenly split: "most participants" viewed scenarios where inflation would fall back to the Fed’s 2% target on its own, as well as scenarios where inflation would stay persistently high. "Virtually all" participants holding the latter view believed rate hikes would be necessary if that scenario occurred. The minutes stated: "Participants generally agreed that information received since the last meeting indicates upside risks to price stability remain elevated, while downside risks to achieving full employment have eased." Ultimately, "all participants" supported keeping interest rates unchanged.
