Strategist: Overhyped Expectations Lead to Pullback in Asian Tech Stocks, Industry Inflection Point Not Yet Reached

June 8. David Chao, Global Market Strategist for J.P. Morgan Asia Pacific, noted that Asian tech stocks got off to a rocky start this week. The pullback was sparked by a major U.S. semiconductor firm reporting lower-than-expected revenue and holding steady on its AI business outlook (instead of raising guidance), fueling a selloff in U.S. stocks. Asian tech stocks are closely tied to the U.S. semiconductor cycle, given their overlapping supply chains and shared investor bases. However, Chao pointed out that one company’s quarterly results don’t necessarily signal a broader industry trend. That’s simply because the market had unrealistically high expectations for continued upward revisions to AI guidance. In Asia, the AI investment theme has become heavily concentrated, driven mostly by just a handful of South Korean and Taiwanese companies. This concentration risk has left the market far more fragile, so any single firm’s underperformance, or demand or supply disruptions, can spark unusual market volatility.
